Tested, classified and verified to European standards
Every BÖLDT fire door and fire curtain is tested by recognised European laboratories and classified to the standards that UK and European specifiers and approving authorities require.

EN 1634-1 furnace testing — every BÖLDT classification is established by full-scale fire test, not estimated.
Standards & Marks
What each certification covers
EN 1634-1
Fire resistance test
The European test method for fire resistance of door, shutter, openable window and curtain assemblies. BÖLDT fire doors and fire curtains are tested to EN 1634-1, establishing integrity and insulation performance for periods up to 240 minutes.
EN 13501-2
Fire classification
The European classification standard. Results from EN 1634-1 testing are expressed as EI, E or EW ratings with a time period in minutes (for example EI 60, EI 120), giving specifiers a directly comparable classification.
EN 12101-1
Smoke barriers
The European product standard for smoke barriers and smoke curtains, covering reliability, durability and the performance of smoke-control components used to protect escape routes and form smoke reservoirs.
EN 16034
Product standard
The harmonised product standard for the fire-resisting and smoke-control characteristics of doorsets, shutters, fire curtains and gates — paired with EN 13241 or EN 14351-1 as the basis for CE / UKCA marking under the Construction Products Regulation.
TÜV SÜD
Independent verification
Fire and smoke curtain assemblies — fabric, head box, guide rails and bottom bar — are independently verified by TÜV SÜD and Efectis, confirming that manufactured products conform to the tested configurations.
UKCA / CE
Construction Products Regulation
Fire safety products placed on the GB and EU markets require UKCA or CE marking with a Declaration of Performance. Contact our technical team for the current marking status and DoP for a specific product.
Compliance Guide
Typical fire-resistance requirements by application
The table below maps common building applications to the relevant UK guidance and the typical classification specified to meet each requirement. Indicative only — confirm against the current Approved Document B, BS 9999 or BS 9991 for the specific building.
| Application | Guidance | Typical classification | Recommended product |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protected stairway enclosures | Approved Document B / BS 9999 | EI 30 – EI 60 | Steel Fire Door |
| Flat entrance doors (residential) | FS(E) Regs 2022 / BS 9991 | FD30S – FD60S | Steel Fire Door |
| Firefighting shafts & lobbies | Approved Document B / BS 9999 | EI 120 | Hollow Metal Shaft Door |
| Compartment walls between occupancies | Approved Document B | EI 60 – EI 120 | Steel / Glazed Fire Door |
| Hospital compartment intersections | HTM 05-02 / BS 9999 | EI 120 | Steel / Glazed Fire Door |
| Atrium & large-volume compartmentation | EN 1634-1 / BS 9999 | Up to EI 240 | Fire Curtains |
| Smoke control to escape routes | EN 12101-1 | Classified | Smoke Curtains |
Standards Equivalence
Mapping the evidence across frameworks
BÖLDT products are tested and classified to European standards. The table below maps those standards to the UK and Indian frameworks, so evidence can be read against whichever regime applies to your project.
| Purpose | Europe (EN) | United Kingdom | India (legacy) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire resistance test | EN 1634-1 | BS 476-20 / -22 (legacy) | IS 3614 |
| Classification | EN 13501-2 (EI, E, EW) | BS 476 integrity / insulation | IS 3614 rating |
| Product standard & marking | EN 16034 · CE | UKCA | ISI mark |
| Smoke control | EN 12101-1 | BS EN 12101 | — |
Local Reference
One EN classification, recognised across Europe
BÖLDT products are tested and classified exclusively to the harmonised EN standards (EN 1634-1, EN 12101-1, EN 13501-2, EN 16034). The same EI classification is the reference point used by national frameworks across the EU — including DIN 4102/MLAR in Germany, the ERP/IGH regulations and DTUs in France, CTE DB-SI in Spain, and the Codice di Prevenzione Incendi in Italy — so a single tested and certified product range is directly applicable to projects in any of these markets.
Quality Assurance
From raw material to finished assembly
Certification is only meaningful when it reflects what is actually manufactured. Every BÖLDT fire door and fire curtain is produced at our 111,000 sq ft facility using the same materials, processes and tolerances validated in the certified test assemblies — from incoming steel and fabric inspection, through CNC fabrication and powder coating, to final dimensional and functional checks before dispatch.
